"Darkheart can you show me the hunting crouch one more time? I'm not sure If I got it right.",Leopardpaw whinned, her amber eyes pleading to be sleeping back in bed. Darkheart had woken her up before dawn to teach Leopardpaw the lesson of being able to work at odd hours. At any moment during any season, at any time, another clan could attack, whether or not it was dawn, day, or dusk. But if you can wake yourself up, and do battle, and/or hunting quickly you could save your clan. Darkheart would first make Leopardpaw hunt until mid-day. Then she could nap before Darkheart would have Pineclaw teach her some battle moves, and have her battle him. Darkheart was thinking about doing this a few days in a row, or until Leopardpaw seemed comfortable with getting up,hunting, and battling at strange times of the day. Darkheart now looked back at her apprentice.
"Leopardpaw, like this.Keep your tail off the ground;you're not a newborn kit! Belly up! Slid your paws! Keep that up and you might be able to catch a few mice before mid-day.", the mentor told the cat. "Now go and hunt, I'll be watching you from afar, act like you're on an assesment." Leopardpaw started to give a moan, but the irritating twitch of her mentor's tail made her huff it out before stalking away.
The first rays of the sun had just rising over the horizen, golden hues spreading out into a rosy color, that clashes with the blue sky that was growing lighter every second, the stars fading slowly. CRACK! the lound sound of a breaking twig rang in Leopardpaw's ears. Her head turned imediatly towards the sound, her claws extented, ready to fight. What she saw was a surprissing sight. A big, plump squirrel had tried to cross a weak branch, and it snaped under the weight. It tried to dash away to the nearest tree, but Leopardpaw caught it quickly, giving it the death blow to the head. She then scapped some leaves on it, and smirked. I don't have to hunt too much, with it raining fat squrriels, I could take a nap, and Darkheart wouldn't even notice. She's probably off flirting with Pineclaw. Leopardpaw caught two mice, a bird, and another squrriel before she found a spot the rising sun had dried, and was now warming to take a short nap.
"If I were you Leopardpaw I'd get up and start hunting, the fresh-kill pile is empty, and everyone's waking up hungry.", a deep voice said, along with a cold wet nose proding her side. Leopardpaw realized it was Pineclaw by the scent, and jumped up in panic.
"You wont tell Darkheart will you? Please, She'll shred my ears if she new I went to sleep! How long was I asleep?". Leopardpaw mewed in a hurray.
"I won't have to tell Darkheart, she probably saw you go to sleep, and I don't know how long you've been sleeping. It's been awhile since dawn though."
"Can you hunt a little with me?", Leopardpaw pleaded. Pineclaw purred, then licked the top of her head.
"I'll bring back whatever you've already caught back to camp, but I don't know if I'm on any patrols today, I'll have to ask. I'll see you later though.", Leopardpaw then told him where the prey was, and left him to go hunting.
"I'm soo mouse-brained! I won't have any ears, fur, or tail by the time I'm a warrior if I keep this up!"
